Secondary School

Secondary School
The Secondary school is rapidly growing. In August 2018 we started our Year 11 classes and will have reached Year 13 by 2020 through the addition of subsequent year groups each year. The academic programme is based on the English National Curriculum, but is not bound by its constraints. Instead, we apply the most appropriate elements and enhance the curriculum to provide an innovative, challenging and creative programme that is crucial in laying the foundation of core knowledge, skills and understanding required to embark on the IGCSE programme of study.  Lessons and materials are adapted to our international and local context.

All students study English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Geography, History, Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian Studies, Drama, Music, Art, PE and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education). Each subject is taught by a specialist in that subject. Where appropriate, instruction is student-centred, enquiry-based and geared towards problem solving. The very best teaching and learning pedagogy are applied by specialist teachers who are passionate and knowledgeable in their subject areas.

The opportunities for independent learning increase throughout Secondary. Students are encouraged to assess their own work and to learn to formulate their own next learning steps. They are encouraged to think critically and take risks in the classroom in order to develop problem-solving skills, for we believe that making mistakes is a vital part of the learning process. Project work is an essential component both individually and in groups. There are also a range of opportunities for students to pursue their areas of interest in greater depth both in school and through relevant enrichment experiences beyond the classroom.

Learning is supported by up-to-date technology. Every student is provided with an iPad or MacBook, and Internet access is available throughout the school campus. Lessons incorporate technology where appropriate, and rely on more traditional media where technology does not provide a clear benefit.

Highly experienced and specialist teachers with high expectations ensure BCB students are engaged, inquisitive, and eager to progress. We invite you to if you to visit our school and see how much our students enjoy their learning!

Key Stage 4
In Years 10 and 11, students at BCB will work towards obtaining IGCSE qualifications offered by the Cambridge and Edexcel examination boards. The two-year IGCSE programme is academically rigorous, and recognised to be amongst the best in the world for this age range of students. Many of the subjects will have specific international elements and content, developed by specialists to make the subject matter relevant to students worldwide.

IB Programme
The British College of Brazil is a candidate school* for the Diploma Programme. This school is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy - a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education that we believe is important for our students.

* Only schools authorised by the IB organisation can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted.
